Photographer’s Note

I quit my job so I could drive around the country and visit each of the lower 48 states, starting in California. Hopefully I'll get around to posting photos here regularly (the trip's been on for a month -- www.48stateroadtrip.com).

Anyway: This shot is of the Hearst Castle gardens with Mr. Hearst's cathedral-house standing out in the background. I like photos with paths and roads in them. I also liked having the spire of the house sticking up out of the trees, made me think there'd be a lot to explore in this frame.

The gardens and pools were my favorite parts of the complex. Most of the rest of it was tacky beyond belief -- and absolutely worth visiting for how unbelievable it was. The tour guide would explain that the chairs along the walls in the dining hall were choir chairs that had originally been in a gothic cathedral in France. Doesn't that cathedral still need those...? And the main house itself was designed to look like a cathedral, but not because Hearst was particularly religious, just -- who knows? Supposedly he was trying to make the compound like a Mediterranean village, but other than having a cathedral in the middle of it, I didn't see many similarities.

Oh well. The man had poor taste. You know, IMHO. But a nice garden.
