Photographer’s Note
The Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette is located in the Pays de Corps, on the heights of the town of La Salette - Fallavaux to nearly 1800 m. altitude.
Each year, tens or even hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and visitors climb the mountain to visit the shrine of spirituality.
Yet up to half of the nineteenth century the site was wild and unknown. Only a few shepherds with their flocks ventured on the slopes of Mount Gargas to take advantage of pastures ..
The fate of this grand and austere rather changed on 19 September 1846, the day when two little shepherds, poor and uneducated, Maximin Giraud (11 years) and Melanie Calvat (15), both originating Corps, saw a Belle Dame ".
The news spread like wildfire and dirt immediately began to attract many pilgrims and curious.
