Photographer’s Note

It was like watching someone pulling home a cow or a water buffalo to its pen. Except this wasn't any of the beasts of burden. This was a whaler.

A whaler is a oars-driven boat with twin dismountable masts and sails. When there is no wind to ride or tack into, up to 14 oarsmen could drive this boat to port.

Once at port, there is a thing about anchoring and keeping it from drifting closer to the beach or going around its anchor like a dog chasing its tail.

After anchoring the whaler, Wan, an Outward Bound School junior instructor in Lumut, Perak pulls the whaler closer to shore before tying the line to a pin or a tree, in a straight line with a little slack, to keep it in place.

Excellent note and photograph, congrats. Your use of the flash is flawless and Tamron shows what it can do. I do not get any benefit to mention Tamron, but I used to use Tamron, when I still was with Canon, but since jumping ship I cannot use Tamron anymore, except I go manual but my analog Tamron lenses are rather heavy. Back to your dramatic photograph. I had no idea what a whaler is, I first thought it's a fish, but as you explained it is a boat. The sky is very moody, what adds to the action filled atmosphere. Well done
