Photographer’s Note

This is a man-made waterfall that feeds into an aqueduct to power the water wheel at one of the old Black Forest sawmills in the Höllental, the valley where the sun never shines in the winter. This waterfall actually powered a different sawmill than the one from yesterday's photo (there were several in the area), but for an idea of what one looks like click here.

The idea of building a waterfall seemed utterly bizzare to me at first. But then again, it is also rather ingenious. Even hundreds of years ago foresters had figured out a way of working with the forces of nature to create renewable energy and resources. And foresters of today are faced with the same challenges and goals. Different times, different technology, same principles?
