Photographer’s Note
View from the Hvitfeldt Crypt in Valla Church, Tjorn Island on the Swedish westcoast (my home-island). Margrete Hvitfeldt owed lots of land and lived between 1608-1683. She was married to Thomas Dyre and they had three children, who all died as children or very young. In the Hvitfeldt Crypt there are five coffins, made of oak tree. The smallest one, with the little baby daughter Bente is not visible on this photo. The coffin to the left belongs to the son Hartvig, the highest one to the son Ivar, who became 18 years old, beside him his mother Margrete Hvitfeldt, who donated lots of land and money to education for young people. It is said that this is the largest land donation in Sweden ever. To the right is the coffin of her husband, Thomas Dyre, who was Danish. Margrete Hvitfeldt is rather famous in Sweden and has also founded a college in Gothenburg, Hvitfeldtska Gymnasiet.
