Photographer’s Note
Cascade Falls
Cascade River State Park
near Grand Marais, Minnesota
Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior is lined with a series of beautiful state parks ...it seems like there is one every ten to twenty miles as one heads up the shore .. Their motif is for the most part very similar .. beautiful North Shore views of Superior .. rivers rushing and cascading down into the lake .. through the thick forests of the North Woods .. abundant wildlife ..
Cascade River State Park has been on my to do list since I discovered it on the state park site .. the Park's site begins with the statement:
"Come to Cascade for the rushing river and grand waterfalls that lay within a gorge, lush with moss and ferns that grow on black volcanic rocks."
It certainly did not disappointment. This first fall .. Cascade Falls .. is located just a couple hundred feet from the parking lot off of Scenic Highway 61 that runs along the North Shore.

Hello John,
The whole shot comes together so beautifully from the start of the descent to the swirling bottom. I like the contrast between the silky smoothness of the water and the craggy, jagged textures of the rocks. It is so naturally framed by the moss and the algae.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)
I enjoyed reading your profile.
As a retired teacher, who has experienced children with differing degrees of autism, I found your notes very 'moving'.

Bonjour John,
Best regards.

Hey John,
Excellent exposition and a lovely motive. Good framing too, I guess it wouldnt look as nice if you`d have left in more of the trees. Nice stuff.
Best regards.

It will come as no surprise to you that I love this image. The motion of the water is just as I like it. You have considered your POV and framing carefully, so there is just the right amount of foliage as a natural frame for the falls. The three small cascades at the bottom add much to the whole of the scene. I guess the top right corner gave you some trouble, but you handled the brightness admirably. Well done

Hi John
Nice waterfall image with excellent silky water, I'm always impressed how long exposure boosts the highlights so that the water can flash against the surrounding darkness.
Have a nice day JY

Hallo John!
Here I like especially the presentation of the water in front of this a bit mystic cave which really gives dynamics to the photo.TGhe frame of the green branches is another plus factor in this picture. A photo to marvel, and a somehow refreshing one in these days of heat and sultriness ...
Greetings from unbearable sticky Germany where one thunderstorm follows the other ...

Hi John,
Excellent POV with beautiful colours. Good use of the vertical format to emphasize the height of the fall. As you probably know I like the effect of long exposure ;) This is a brilliant picture! My compliments.

John,
This is a great shot of this majestic waterfall. The vertical composition if fine here showing us good closeup detail while allowing us to see the full height of the falls. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The long exposure add a nice effect to the moving water.

Hi John,
A really beutiful scene you have captured here. Your light mangement is really impressive you could actually see a lot of the texture and detail of the rocks also in darker parts. I also like the natural framing of green vegetation and the silky look of the waterfall against the dark rocks. TFS and have a nice day!
Cheers,
Ulf

HI John,
Hats off to you for successfully metering this scene. I have taken waterfalls photos before with no success because of overexposure on the water. I can't make any suggestions regarding composition, it is flawless. Best regards...

Hi John:
Beautiful but simple shot. Exposure is perfect, and this is just such a beautiful waterfall. I've heard that northern Minnesota and Michigan are a great place for waterfalls. I guess now I see why. Great shot.

Hello John ,
This is a very fine capture of a little piece of paradise . I don't always like the effect of the long exposure (a personnal taste of course) . But this one is very effective . The contrast with the black rocks , the framing by the green trees are oyher great features .

Bonjour John.
Ici la pose longue pour obtenir le flou de la chute est tout à fait justifié et le résultat est magnifique. J'aime la verdure qui encadre ce beau voile de mariée.

Hi John,
This is one of the beautiful waterfall photos I've seen. I do like the way you framed it show the water flowing past the opening of the grotto behind, and then framed the rock with the greens in both sunlight and shadow. The slow shutter speed turns the cascade to silk; if ever a waterfall benefited by this technique, the volume of water flowing here surely does. Jus t gorgeous!!

Hi John. Always a pleasure viewing your nature photos, I seem to have less and less time to go out and shoot some for myself. Still I’d rather be busy. Nice capture, great natural framing with the foliage. Great textures and colours also. Thanks for sharing.
Have a good Sunday, Paul.

Hello John!
First of all, I visited Cascade River State Park Site and I am amazed by what I found! Realy abundant wildlife a paradise!
Then I examined carefully your post. You captured very well the waterfall and framed equally well, as I see this PoV must be unique! One second was enough to write on sensor the movement, John! It was the perfect way.
I love these soft curves of the falling water!
It’s blue colour tone contrast perfectly with the dark background.
Thanks for sharing the beauties of the places you "live in"!
Warm regards,
Athanasios.

Hi John
Beautifully shown falls, I like the way you've used a slow shutter to make a dreamy falls out of a simple one. The only problem, well its not a problem at all is that one looking at it cannot guage the size of the falls.
Thanks for sharing...
Cheers, Blue
