Fog is a cloud that is in contact with the ground. A cloud may be considered partly fog; for example, the part of a cloud that is suspended in the air above the ground is not considered fog, whereas the part of the cloud that comes in contact with higher ground is considered fog. Fog is distinguished from mist only by its density, as expressed in the resulting decrease in visibility: Fog reduces visibility to less than 1 km, whereas mist reduces visibility to no less than 2 km. For aviation purposes in the UK, a visibility of less than 10 km but greater than 999 m is considered to be mist if the relative humidity is 95% or greater - below 95% haze is reported.
The foggiest place in the world is the Grand Banks off the island of Newfoundland, the meeting place of the cold Labrador Current from the north and the much warmer Gulf Stream from the south. The foggiest land areas in the world are Point Reyes, California, and Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, both with over 200 foggy days per year. Even in generally warmer southern Europe, thick fog and localized fog is often found in lowlands and valleys, such as the lower part of the Po Valley and the Arno and Tiber valleys, especially in late autumn and winter.

Foggy weather add mysterious feel to the scene, natural color and lighting to show the dim environment, however the colorful houses are still clear to see, thanks for sharing a poetic view.

Thanks for the great note on FOG :) Very intersting.
Your photograph is wonderful. The waters are still allowing you to capture many reflections.
Your shot is very clean & clear. Great DOF. Nice overall sharpness in the entire frame.
POV is excellent.

Tom, you have got my number, I love this, these i suppose, with the fog and especially on a running tide. Great work in all ways.

cette brume qui camoufle le décor donne un air de mystère à ce cliché, c'est de toute beauté.

The fog brings an air of mystery to the little as well as pleasing soft light and tones. A fine composition with a well chosen point of view. I like the presence of the little boat, which is well placed in the frame and the reflections.

Moody & atmospheric with the fog also imparting a mysterious ambience. Good reflections & minimalist colour with a superb diffused light. Well done!

It's very rare I would consider taking photos in fog, but you have shown me the possibilites I'm missing. There are some excellent reflections and the muted house colours are very pleasant for the eyes.

this view is so poetic and atmospheric! Very well working POV on the already well known colorful houses. I love fog by the sea and you have managed to capture the mysterious atmosphere excellently. My compliments!

The fog gives this photo a mysterious mood. Your composition is fine using the reflection depth and balance. The muted lighting is nice yielding pale colors and soft details. The addition of the dock was a good choice providing a good lead in for the shot.

Still a nice reflection on the water even with the fog, Definitely a mysterious feel scene here you captured, Very well done on the sharpness and colors, I like the clarity in this image you can see the house through the fog Tom.

Oh, I like this, Tom!
I love how the visibilty decreases with distance, giving an air of mystery! This is the type of setting for most 'spooky' stories!
Despite the obviously poor visability, your images are sharp and the reflections, like a mirror.
Lovely composition. The white boat looks like a 'safe' haven, should it be necessary!
Have a good w/e,

Hello Tom! You made a great fog collection and it is hard to choose which one goes best, they all have the typical East coast foot print with lobster traps, boat houses, the little ship in the harbour ... and a lot of fog. A very moody picture, full of "seaweed", moisture and foghorn sounds ... Very very nice, I like it a lot. Have a great Wednesday, Barbara.
PS. I was just the other day looking at flights over to Nova Scotia, just being curious, and the Lufthansa flight I guess it was stops in Newfoundland ... but reading your note about the foggiest places, now I don't know ... LOL.

Very characteristically Maine-like, Tom. (At least I think so--I've only been there once!) The composition draws the eye toward the houses in the distance, which is good. Regards, Ken.

The fog adds a feeling of loneliness, making the houses look like abandoned!
I like the low point of view, making us look up at the wooden pier...
Your fine note explains that fog is not as rare as it may appear in TE, I guess we just photograph less in foggy days..!
photoray (13725) 2009-08-03 21:11
Nicely composed fog scenery, enough fog to be mystical yet enough light to show details and water reflections.
PS: I just returned from a trip to Point Reyes on July 29th, and it was so foggy that visibility was less than 50 feet. To see the lighthouse, required walking right up next to it.

I like the atmosphere is moist and mysterious fog. Excellent composition and very good light in spite of adverse conditions.
