Photographer’s Note
The monastery of Sant Salvador (building on the left) is a former Benedictine monastery located in the Catalonian town of Breda, in the county of La Selva, near the massif of Montseny. Along with the rest of the old part of town was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1974
The monastery and the castle Montsoriu, is closely related to the home of Cabrera, viscounts Girona. According to the founding, the viscounts Guerau Ermesenda and decided to build the monastery in order to "save their souls" and that God will help them escape their enemies.
Construction began on June 4 of 1038 and who oversees the work was Sunyer, first abbot of Sant Salvador. Sunyer died before the building was finalized and his successor, Abbot Amat, who finally completed the work. The monastery church was consecrated by the bishops of Girona and Barcelona on October 4th of 1068. The ceremony was attended Ponç Guerau, son of the Viscounts of Cabrera, and various nobles.
The building on the left is the tower of what was the church of Santa Maria. Now houses the museum deidcado artist Josep nuevecentista Aragall. The bells of the tower marked the quarters and the hours.
