This old Missouri Crematory building is actually part of four buildings on this site in the city of St. Louis. Although it is a somewhat macabre subject, the buildings are old and interesting.

This is the main building that draws your attention when driving down Sublette Ave. south from Arsenal St., near the old State Hospital on the Hill in St. Louis city. It was built in 1885 - the sixth modern crematorium built in the United States. It's an intriguing building and if you explore some you notice that it is still in use... It is actually called Hillcrest Abbey Crematory & Mauseoleum and now owned by some funeral parlor conglomerate.

I was driving around one Saturday morning going to garage sales when I happened by here. I had taken some photographs of it with my 35mm years ago, who knows where those are... So I thought I would try again. The light was nice, coming in from the east at a low angle. Other than the purpose, the building is really very interesting.

There is another building on the site with the name "Columbarium" emblazoned on the top. That is where many of the ashes are held, more of that later on.

I've had this photo ready to go for a while, I think it is an interesting place to show you - one that might not hit the St. Louis tourist board's radar. I was just looking for a good day to post it.

I figure this could be my nod of recognition to Michael Jackson, since his service is being held today. For some, this may be a befitting upload.

I just hope the Michael Jackson poster from 1985 I have on eBay goes well - it closes tonight.
