Old cathedral Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul de Maguelone of the 12th 13th centuries, bishopric of the VIth century, until its transfer to Montpellier on March 27th, 1636.

It is built on an small island, between lagoonal and brackish ponds and the Mediterranean.
Roman city and seaport at the 2rd century, town of Septimanie and base sarrazine ruined by the King of France Charles Martel into 737.
From 1037 the bisops rebuild the Saint-Pierre Cathedral.
June 29th, 1096 the pope Urbain II blesses the Island and the church of it the first proclaims after that of Rome.
Popes took refuge there, such Urbain II, Gélase II, Calixte II, Innocent II, Alexandre III who devoted the main altar.
Maguelone as a pontifical fief, preserved the territory of Montpellier of any war and serfdom.
January 16th, 1632 louis XIII orders the demolition of it
January 12th, 1708 alienation of the stones for the construction of the channel of the Rhone to Sète which passes in the vicinity.

Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone is a French commune, located in the department of the Herault of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 8 161 Villeneuvois, distributed on 23 km², that is to say 323 hab./km².

Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone has a sea front which extends on more than 9 kms and offers 1 a thousand of hectares of spaces lagunaires, of brackish water in which, the professionals fish sea-breams, eels, plates, bars (in french).
