Photographer’s Note

The Merdeka Square - Indepence Square - of Butterworth is not far from the ferry pier to Gorge Town on the island of Penang. At the horizon the island of Penang can be seen.

Butterworth is a industrial town on the northwest coast of West Malaysia and lies along the Perai River estuary opposite the port of George Town on Penang Island. The modern township is a railhead and transshipment point for exports of the Malay Peninsula and is linked by ferry to George Town. Among the key industries of busy Butterworth are rubber, oil-import facilities, tin and steel. Moreover there is a Malaysian air force base where also Australian personal are stationed. The town is named after William T. Butterwoth, the governor of Singapore and Malacca from 1843-55.
