On a dirty road on the North-West of the island of Ikaria, my rental scooter did not want to move. Then I met "the Wolf" (Ο λύκος, O Lycos in Greek). Don’t worry, I’m not the Little Red Riding Hood and this man was not the Big Bad Wolf but a gentle man who was given this nickname. Instead I have to wait for the repair along the road; he invited me to his house. “This is the first house of the Wolf,” he told me. “My grand-father builds this house long time ago. At that time they made fire under a huge stone until the bottom was broken. Then they built a wall under this natural stone roof.” Such kind of houses was built against the pirates, who made incursions into the island. “From the sea you see only stones and you can not imagine that there are houses below.”
This one-room house was then used as a stable for goats and another stone house was built behind. It has also been deserted by the family who lives today in a comfortable house in the village. “But every day I come here to give water to the orchard, to work in the garden.” The Wolf invited me on the roof of the house. “Look at the view that we have here. Is this not wonderful?” We can see indeed the whole valley carved by a river and the sea below.

Sur une mauvaise route du Nord-Ouest de l’île d’Ikaria, mon scooter de location n’a plus voulu avancer. C’est alors que j’ai rencontré « le loup » (Ο λύκος, O Lycos en grec). N’aillez crainte, je ne suis pas le Chaperon rouge et cet homme n’était pas le Grand Méchant Loup, mais un homme aimable que l’on surnomme ainsi. Au lieu que je doive attendre le réparateur le long de la route, il m’a invité dans sa maison. « C’est la première maison du Loup, me dit-il. A cette époque, ils faisaient un feu sous une énorme pierre jusqu’à ce que la partie inférieure se brise. Ensuite, ils construisaient un mur sous ce toit naturel. » Ce type de maison était construite contre les pirates, qui faisaient des incursions dans l’île. « Depuis la mer, on ne voit pas que des pierres et on n’imagine pas qu’il y a une maison en dessous. »
Cette maison d’une pièce a ensuite été utilisée comme étable pour les chèvres et une autre maison de pierre a été construite derrière. Elle a à son tour été désertée par la famille, qui vit dans une maison moderne dans le village. « Mais chaque jour je viens ici pour arroser les arbres fruitiers, travailler au jardin » Le Loup m’emmène sur le toit de la maison. « Regarde la vue que l’on a d’ici. N’est-ce pas merveilleux ? » On peut voir en effet toute la vallée creusée par un torrent et la mer en dessous. La suite demain…
