Photographer’s Note

The main road through the eastern parish of St. Thomas hugs the shoreline for a long stretch from the limestone cliffs of White Horses (reminiscent of those of Dover and Etrétat) to the town of Morant Bay. At Rozelle, a small multi-branch waterfall emerges from the rocks at the side of the road and in times of heavy flow sprays the road surface. The falls are popular with locals who are often to be seen bathing under them despite the proximity of passing cars, buses and heavy trucks. At weekends, the falls also attract families from further afield, such as Kingston.

The site is particularly charming because of its informality. There is no provision for parking; the small number of travelers who stop leave their cars on the sea side, walk across the road to bathe and then buy cold jelly coconuts, honey, “roots” tonic and mangoes at the two or three little stalls before going on their way.

I was taking another series of shots along the beach on Sunday when this family arrived. I liked what I saw but I didn’t want to be intrusive, nor did I want any posing. So I took this single photo very rapidly without much hope of getting something good. I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and hope you will agree.

Hello Mary.
A great photography full of life, showing such a natural scene in these places. The POV is very good, the colors very balanced like that as the light and also good quality. Finally I congratulate you also on the frame, a nice work.

What an interesting little spot, for refreshment in body and spirit -- a roadside Eden. I love the postures of the people -- the woman smiling and the man encouraging the child who apparently does not want to get wet! You captured a delightful moment.

a "roadside eden" is really the appropriate description of this almost biblical scene! I like the atmosphere here very much.

Hi Mary,
As you can see, many people agree with your opinion that it worked out well. You framed their joy with nice balance and excellent light management. I might have cropped it a little tighter on the bottom to give more detail to the faces but that might have interfered with the balance. The top is perfect, it really gives a jungle feel.
