Photographer’s Note
Last weekend my oldest friend and I went to a "Beer Brunch" in a bar/restaurant/brewery called "The Stables" in the Soulard Neighborhood. By "beer brunch", I mean exactly what it sounds. Breakfast with beer. It doesn't start until 11am, and by then it's noon somewhere, right?
Neither of us had ever been there before, so we had to check out a few of their beers while having breakfast. They were pretty good! But then, I have met few beers about which I haven't had something positive to say...
That restaurant is located in the old horse stables of the historic Lemp Brewery - they made Falstaff beer there for many years. It has since been abandoned and utilized for several different things, like a haunted house during Halloween.
We decided to drive around Soulard after breakfast, just to check out that neighborhood. I was taking several shots so my buddy thought it would be a good idea to go into this neighborhood tavern - The Cat's Meow. He said it used to be filled with cat stuff all over it. There was a little bit this day, but the bartender said the new owner stored most of it and they rotate it from time to time.
It was still some local Soulard flavor, though. I lived in this neighborhood for a year or so before I joined the Navy. That's a whole different, long story! It has changed plenty since 1977, but then in some ways it has not.
So, to be polite, we had a bottle of Bud Light (a "blue yummy" as they are known) and talked with some of the locals. I got two interesting shots that will show you the flavor of this establishment. Check the workshop for one of the bartender. I got this one on the way out. I used Jan Jasmis' suggestion and yelled "Hey everybody, look over here" and then shot the picture. Did everyone look? No. Some did though...
Local Soulard flavor, beer for breakfast, what more could you ask?
Have a great Tuesday!

Excellent docu shot, Reed. I like the man with the ol' blue eyes, though I'm not sure what he thinks of you taking this picture. And the other guy just looks like he's been sitting there for ages! LOL!
Beer for breakfast? It could be Antwerp...

Hi Reed,
Great shot of daily life. You almost put us (the viewers) inside the tavern. Nice to be in Missouri today!
Beer brunch seems a good idea. It reminds me the "breakfast" Moose Milk of the Canadian warships.

Hello Reed,
Sounds interesting, it kind of like listening to what his name's joke, How you know you're a red reck, if you drink beers with scrambled egg and sausage :) Anyway, I'll pass on that. I like my coffee or milk with my breakfast, I'm very American that way. I love this, many interesting charactors and it really show the atmosphere of the Tavern. I've not been to a beer tavern in years. Wine are so in now that beers is trying to make a comeback. Have a good day.

Hello Reed,
Your wonderfully engaging essay accompanies this excellent photo. On one hand, I like images where the subjects are oblivious to the presence of the photographer; on the other, I rather like the expressions of these characters. Excellent composition, light control and resolution. I had never heard of a beer-brunch, but St. Louis is a beer capitol, and it's proper that this enterprise should be located there.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi Reed,
this looks pretty good and noiseless for such a high ISO.I like the expression of the guy on the right. I also smiled at Jan's suggestion to get attention fixed on your lens. Maybe I will try that....if I get brave enough.
