Photographer’s Note

Last weekend my oldest friend and I went to a "Beer Brunch" in a bar/restaurant/brewery called "The Stables" in the Soulard Neighborhood. By "beer brunch", I mean exactly what it sounds. Breakfast with beer. It doesn't start until 11am, and by then it's noon somewhere, right?

Neither of us had ever been there before, so we had to check out a few of their beers while having breakfast. They were pretty good! But then, I have met few beers about which I haven't had something positive to say...

That restaurant is located in the old horse stables of the historic Lemp Brewery - they made Falstaff beer there for many years. It has since been abandoned and utilized for several different things, like a haunted house during Halloween.

We decided to drive around Soulard after breakfast, just to check out that neighborhood. I was taking several shots so my buddy thought it would be a good idea to go into this neighborhood tavern - The Cat's Meow. He said it used to be filled with cat stuff all over it. There was a little bit this day, but the bartender said the new owner stored most of it and they rotate it from time to time.

It was still some local Soulard flavor, though. I lived in this neighborhood for a year or so before I joined the Navy. That's a whole different, long story! It has changed plenty since 1977, but then in some ways it has not.

So, to be polite, we had a bottle of Bud Light (a "blue yummy" as they are known) and talked with some of the locals. I got two interesting shots that will show you the flavor of this establishment. Check the workshop for one of the bartender. I got this one on the way out. I used Jan Jasmis' suggestion and yelled "Hey everybody, look over here" and then shot the picture. Did everyone look? No. Some did though...

Local Soulard flavor, beer for breakfast, what more could you ask?

Have a great Tuesday!
