Lake Batur is a beautiful lake located at the foot on Mount Batur and Mount Abang. Best seen at dawn when the mists slowly lift to reveal the lake’s incredible beauty and the high walls of a vast crater rim. Scenic views of Lake Batur can be had from Kintamani, but otherwise it’s best to avoid this rather nondescript town and drive the short distance down to the lake itself (which is only about 15-20 minutes from Kintamani) and stay there instead. It’s also possible to climb Mount Batur if you fancy a few hours strenuous exercise. The last time it exploded was in 1917 when it claimed thousands of lives and destroyed hundreds of pura (Hindu temples).
