Photographer’s Note

The light at high latitudes is magical. Especially in the early morning and late evening. And autumn seems to be a particularly dramatic time. Is the sky jealous of the beautiful fall colors of the trees?

This is one of a sequence of photos that I shot at dawn over about a two-month period in the fall of 2006. The location: Hjortekaer Sø, a small pond in the NW corner of Jaegersborg Dyrehave, which is the outskirts of Kobenhavn. I was staying in a flat that borders the park less than a km from this pond. Each morning before work, while it was still dark, I would poke my head out of the flat to check on the sky. If I could see stars, which happened maybe one or two days per week, then I quickly had some breakfast, grabbed my camera, and hopped on my bike to see the dawn, either at this pond or at the Oresund (the strait separating Denmark from Sweden) about 5 km to the east.

The other two photos I've posted in the past week or so from Denmark ("duck" and "dawn fog") are from this same pond. More to follow.
