Photographer’s Note
This is not an image that would be considered the 'best' or storytelling but there is just something about it. As I browse through these images I realize just how intriguing the human face really is and how so much individuality is conveyed through it. Compared to six weeks ago I have completely changed my thinking of beauty. As I was trying my hardest to stand out in the sun to come home with even a touch of a tan (to which I have been greeted by my friend's and family with.. "Where's your tan? *comparing of arms* I don't think you went to Thailand... I am darker then you are!" so... failed in that category apparently!), the local Thais would take my arm while quite excitedly saying "suay!" meaning 'pretty' - every shop in town had some sort of whitening product sitting on the shelf (even whiting deodorant!).
This man in an Akha village near Ban Mae Suai would never be in Vogue, he probably would never even be in a travel magazine as he does fit any preconceived idea about how someone in this region 'should' look, but that is what is so interesting about this portrait if you ask me. His wrinkles have me almost anticipate my older years due to the character they bring to his face.
This was taken during on the third day of a trip I took with one of the Thai girls I was working with when she went to visit her family in her Akha hilltribe village. An amazing experience to be certain - just to see their way of life; simple, family-oriented... it was such a gift.
