Photographer’s Note

The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is a beautiful cloistered convent located in Arequipa, Peru. It was built in 1580. With over 20,000-square-meter, this very well preserved monastery looks like a city, with streets, gardens, cloisters and is characterised by the vividly painted walls.
More than 450 nuns lived in the monasterio and had no contacts with the outside world until 1970.

Now, there are approximately 20 nuns currently living in the northern corner of the complex; the rest of the monastery is open to the public. The monasterio conserve his original architecture from the XVI century.
