Photographer’s Note

Denmark has a temperate climate and the winters are cold. Therefore the sailing season is limited to the summer which can be fairly wet, although enjoying long days. The sailing season in Denmark begins at the end of April/beginning of May and ends about 1st of October.
Sailing in Denmark (and in Scandinavia) is not considered to be a rich man’s pastime but a part of the way of life for ordinary people.

You don’t even have to own your own boat to explore the Danish waters, as boats can be chartered for short or long trips as required. If you are no sailor, you can even order a boat complete with skipper and crew! However, as a rule you will be required to prove that you are an experienced sailor before being allowed to take them out on the water.

Høruphav on the island of Als in Souther Jutland is a small and cozy fishing hamlet with a boat harbour. The harbour was built in 1842 in order to defend the Danish coast against potential enemies from the South. The harbour has space for 300 boats and is beautifully surrounded by woods and sheltered from the wind. The building in the background is a hotel with a restaurant which is quite remarkable due to its high gastronomic standards. The Hotel Baltic was built in 1875, when this region was a part of Prussia.
