The Woman of Pollina Photo

Photographer’s Note

The woman of Pollina did not want any photo.
I had with her a long and good conversation.
He explained that older people were unwilling to leave this beautiful village perched at 750 meters high over the park Madonie, between Palermo and Messina, with a splendid sea view.
Young people at the opposite went to stay in a nucleus near the sea called Finale, to enjoy a milder climate and have more ease in movement and in the management of everyday life.
We talked about many other topics and it was beautiful and interesting listen to her words.
I spoke of my passion for photography and why I was there, walking 500km in one day to take some photos ...
So she wanted the photograph, and here, the wonderful and proud "Donna di Pollina"!

This is what I like about photographing people. The interaction between the person and the photographer is always important. You can steal a picture with any long lenses but you can not tell any story about it.
So, I love your shot of Mrs Donna di Pollina! It is perfect.

interessante la tua storia anche se avrei voluto che tu aggiungessi il perchè gli anziani di questo luogo non hanno voluto lasciare questo paesino nel palermitano.

Sebbene a vedere dallo sguardo, la signora non sembra ancora molto entusiasta dall'essere fotografata, contrariamente a come dici nella nota, la foto devo ammettere che è molto particolare perchè mostra in modo chiaro, come ancora oggi si vive in alcuni luoghi, dove la vita non è solo quella nelle grandi città, come spesso ci fanno vedere, omettendo queste realtà per paura di sentirsi degradati.

Bonjour Giorgio.
C'est encore un beau portrait mais dans son décor familier. J'aime ce décor qui n'a rien d'un décor de théâtre. Tout y est vrai. La "Donna di Pollina" semble avoir du caractère, mais tu as su l'amadouer.

even after your discussion she is not convinced! What a wonderful posture of her you have captured here, she looks almost defiant. It is also the way she has drawn back to the innermost corner of the doorway hiding her mouth that is telling me that she is suspicious.

non e' detto che perche' la signora non sorride tu non le abbia fatto cambiare idea riguardo alla foto - non tutti hanno l'espressione da posa fotografica, e per fortuna dico io - perche' questa immagine ne avrebbe risentito. non so se l'effetto leggermente sgranato e' voluto (per dare un'effetto da quotidiano, nel senso di giornale) o se e' il risultato della maschera di contrasto o del ridimensionamento. fatto sta che dona molto alla foto, le da' un carattere quasi anni 60-70.

Una fiera, burbera, arrabbiata ma peraltro bellissima vecchia signora, decisamente contraria al fatto di essere fotografata. Ma ci sei riuscito, e con un risultato eccellente! Che bello, quanto profondamente autentico lo spicchio di vita siciliana che hai saputo fermare! Bravissimo!

bellissima scena, non si capisce se la donna sia contenta o arrabbiata della foto, tecnicamente perfetta anche se avrei agito un po' piu' sulla texture dei muri bianchi, almeno sul mio monitor sparano.
comunque rimane un ottimo lavoro

credo che tu abbia ormai capitalizzato certe regole e certi meccanismi e ti sia creato uno stile che ti contraddistingue.
Pochi elementi, incisivi, esaltati dal processo di PP e l'elemento portante dell'immagine posizionato in maniera accurata, sì da essere ben presente ma mai predominante all'interno della scena, rileggendo e reinterpretando, in un certo qual modo, anche alcune regole compositive.
Qualcuno potrebbe obiettare che forse la qualità dell'immagine non è la più ortodossa, ma diversamente non sarebbe un'immagine alla ciakgiak.

Ciao Giorgio,la prima cosa che ho fatto e' stata leggere la data di scatto....sembra una foto del post-dopoguerra,coi colori delle prime pellicole sperimentali e con quella caratteristica leggera sgranatura.Non so se lo hai fatto apposta o meno,ma il risultato e' davvero eccezzionale,e tutti gli oggetti sono al proprio posto senza disturbarsi.Complimenti,davvero bella,ma adesso non aspettare ancora 6 mesi a metterne un'altra...ti do' l'ultimatum per Giovedi' sera.ehhe...ciao,Luciano.

Giorgio, guarda che hai combinato qui! Non so cosa mi piaccia di più, sei riuscito a mettere in un frame un insieme di elementi interessantissimi, roba da maestri, anzi, direi...robba forte! La signora col suo sguardo, che quasi si protegge dal tuo sguardo che cerca e vuole capire le cose che ha intorno..poi quella porta tutta scrostata...e il numero, il muro...c'è tutto! La fiera Dona di Pollina è un personaggio interessante e che ha un forte carattere, ciò si vede al suo viso e ha la sua espressione. Hai trascorso certamente un momento molto interessante nella sua compagnia.
Mi piace questo piccolo universo, il suo regno molto bene tenuto che lo cingo.
Ad alcuni chilometri della turistica Cefalu, ecco un piccolo pezzo della vita siciliana molto interessante.

Interessante a sua mostra que nos traz um pouco da alma destas populações interioranas da Itália, e como você deve saber, nós brasileiros, temos esta afinidadade expontânea com o seu povo, pois, para o Brasil, no final do Século XIX, migraram muitos patrícios de vocês, e que isto resultou num mosaico etnico-cultural para o Brasil. Agora, a "nona", parece-me que não queria ser fotografada ou ela ficou um pouco assustada com a captura. Bonitos detalhes do cotidiano foram bem mostrados. Abraço, Consuelo

Hi Giorgio,
It's not exactly a palace and it certainly lacks much of the comfort of any modern house, but it has a very special charm in every detail that denotes the care of the owner: the whitewashed wall, the flower pots, etc. It's a brilliant portrait of the lady and her environment. For me it looks so amazingly familiar... You could find all the minor details in many Portuguese villages.

Dear Giorgio

You really had to do a lot of convincing that you could take her picture - congrats. Most of the time I do not ask I just take the shot, because I avoid posing. In your picture you managed that it does NOT look posing. That's already worth a number of stars. Well done. Moreover your handling of the available light and sharpness is very good. Nice color hues as well. Your picture reminds me of my early years when I was traveling a lot in Italy, that was in the 1970s. It looks like that upcountry Italy has not changed much, luckily.

I can understand elder people don't feel to move from their area, their house, where they have spend their whole life! I like to see the old walls, door, this woman sitting in the corner and who's looking at you(almost convinced ;) ...
There is a small mistake in your note about the 500 kms, maybe it was meters ;)
