Photographer’s Note

One year ago I was on vacation in Belgian Ardennes, I brought a visit to Bouillion a lovely small city.
You can see one of the different bridges, a pity these day was very bad weather.

Surrounded by a loop of the Semois river, withdrawn in the deep Ardennes forest, Bouillon, small medieval city is dominated by the Castle of Godefroid. Centuries have passed since the edifice was built, but it has preserved majesty and splendor.

The city is today one of the favorite destinations of holidays in Wallonia. Its numerous visitors are the witnesses of the reputation and of the quality of its hotels and campsites, the restaurants are renowned for their wide range of cooking’s and local specialties; local recepies and specialties of the Ardennes, smoked ham, snails, trout’s, delicatessen, game... Its many marked out walks in the woods for strollers and bikers, animal parks, tourist trains, fishing course, hunting’s and various sport and cultural activities will quickly transform your stay in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes into a pleasant moment of.

Goed avond John,

Une très belle présentation de Bouillon avec un POV très bien choisi. J'aime beaucoup le petit escalier à l'avant-plan. Les reflets des maisons, du pont et même des nuages dans la rivière sont magnifiques. Excellent travail photo.

An excellent POV to catch the reflections of the houses and the bridge, good exposure (esp. the water), and an efficient compo with the stairway leading us up there and then thru the brige... I wasn't aware of this small picturesque town, so I'll take that into acoount...

Hello John. This looks like a pleasant place that you are well presenting with the wide-angle lens that strengthens a feeling of depth and perspective, as usual in your photos. The contrast is also good, and the reflections are well utilized to amplify a quiet overall mood. I am however a little disturbed by two things: (1) the photo looks quite oversharpened, and (2) the framing/cropping is a bit unfortunate, leaving little space for the rooftops and treetops in the upper area, but instead giving a little too much attention to the not overly interesting foreground. I hope you don't mind my honest opinion here.

Dag John,

Deze foto heeft een mooie en originele compositie. De trap die aan de rechter kant het beeld uitgaat maar ongetwijfeld uitkomt op de brug die ons over rivier brengt naar de kleurige huizen.

Hi John,

The mirror effect in the water is an asset to the composition. The point of view is allowing us to see the details and colors of the different buildings. It is also taking our eyes toward the forest in the background which is giving depth to the photo. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice day.

Hoi John, sterk hoe je hier het beeld hebt opgebopuwd rondom de mooi weergegeven reflectie van de grijze lucht. De omnringende kleuren spreken nu des te meer. En door de gekozen hoek is er ook ruimtelijk veel te beleven. Een sterke en mooi gepresenteerde plaat, John.

Hello Dear John,

When I visited Luxembourg three decades ago, while flying on LuxAir, I was told that Luxembourg is the "Land of Bridges." Indeed, hee is a lovely bridge, and the large area of reflections of the clouds in the river makes this an unusual and beautiful photograph. The red flowers in flower boxes hanging from the bridge, and the red awnings in front of the shops adds color highlight. In presenting the steps going up to the bridge you give us an idea of the wall on the other bank of the river.

Hi, John,

Interesting that you express disappointment about the weather. Perhaps your visit wasn't as nice as it might have been. But I think that you have used the cloudy weather nicely to your advantage in this photo.

In the thumbnail, what caught my attention was the lovely reflection of the clouds in the foreground of the river. On looking at the full photo, that initial impression remains a strong positive element.

With purely diffuse lighting from an overcast sky, some different features are emphasized than would be the case on a sunny day. For example, I think the small red details might stand out even more sharply in this weather condition.

I like, too, the way that the reflection of the bridge in the water is so strong to almost make it look like links in a chain.
