Photographer’s Note

This is the picture of one of the festivities during the famous Bastar Dusshera festival which is celebrated in the tribal region of Bastar in the state of Chhattisgarh situated in central India. Bastar is often refferred to as the "Tribal Heartland of India". Bastar is very famous for the indigenous people and their customs and traditions. The Basatar Dusshera is a 75 day long festival in which all the tribes of the region participate. The festival basically revolves around the tribal goddess "Danteshwari" and all the festivities are centred around her.

What your are seeing here in the picture are the local deities of each village and hamlet locally called as "Anga Dev". It is a very interesting tradition in which each village has its own god which is usually in the form of a natural element like a tree, a hill, a stone or even a pond. These "Anga Dev" are placed along the local gods and are worshipped through out the year. During the Dusshera festival, each villager carries their respective "Anga Dev" to the city of Jagdalpur where all the major celebrations take place.

So, what you are seeing here are the numerous "Anga Dev" which have been brought by the people for the religeous ceremonies. These are beautiully decorated with flowers.
