Early morning in Cliff Canyon on the South Rainbow Trail (overland route to Rainbow Bridge). The scene is just downstream from First Water Spring, which is about 7 dry and rugged miles in from the trailhead. This photo is a good example of why I switched to negative film a few years ago. Chromes might not have handled the dynamic range, or would have required perfect exposure. As it is, I digitally burned and dodged extensively to recreate the luminosity of the scene as I saw it on-site.

Update 6-6-09: I have reposted this because I now have a much better scan thanks to improved hardware and techniques. I still did some burn/dodge but not nearly as extensive as the original post. Big improvements in color and luminosity in the shadows, and the sharpening is less "crunchy". This version shows even better the superiority of color negative film in these contrasty shooting conditions. Enjoy!
