Photographer’s Note

The only one I found in this village .......English Heritage at its best.
The thatched roof itself is made of straw and should last 20 to 25 years ....although thatch was normally used by the poor great houses used this most common of materials.
Thatching dates back to the Bronze age ....First the thatch is tied in bundles and laid in an underlayer on the roof beams and pegged in place with rods made of hazel or withy ...then an upper layer is laid over the first and a final reinforcing layer added along the ridge line.
