Photographer’s Note
Latone
Garden Castle of Versailles.
One goes down to the Floor from Latone, either by slopes bordered of statues and vases, or by a monumental staircase. The central basin was created since 1670 (with the site of a basin going back to Louis XIII) then modified in 1689. One sees there Latone with his feet, his Diane children and Apollon, imploring Jupiter to avenge it for the peasants of Lycie who had made fun of it; those Ci were transformed into batrachians, metamorphosis represented on the three degrees constituting the basin and further in the basins of the Lizards.
Perhaps one will see, in this mythological representation, Anne of Austria mother of Louis XIV (Latone) protecting his son (Apollo) against the slingers (batrachians).
