Photographer’s Note
This photo was taken at the game & country fair held in the grounds of Broadlands estate near Romsey.
This man is pictured with one of his many birds of pray this one being a Ferruginous Hawk,
The Ferruginous Hawk is very large compared to the Harris Hawk and which allows the bird to catch bigger prey. The male birds weigh about 1,059 gms and the females around 1,231 gms. These hawks normally feed on rabbits and often snakes and lizards. They fly close to the ground to find their prey or perch in a prominent place.
Ferruginous Hawks are not used in falconry as much as the Harris Hawk. They are harder to handle and train and are very temperamental.
They prefer open, hilly countryside rather than woodland. Because their natural habitat is deserts or dry areas, their flying can be adversely affected when their feathers get wet in areas of high rainfall.

Great shot, Wilson,
wonderful color, well composed, and the detail is incredible. I love the pattern in its wings and the way a bit of light is shining through them. They both stand out beautifully from the BG and I particularly like the tweed vest. VERY nicely done! Excellent note, too. Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Shelly

Hello Wilson,
Personally I find hawks and falcons very beautiful birds. This is a real nice portrait of this older gentleman and the hawk on which he probably is very proud. Taken at the right time when the bird spreads his wings and turns his head to the man.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Wilson
There is a kind of 'complicity' between the hawk who's looking at his smiling master...You have handled well the light condition, allowing to see quite well the details of the 'plumage'.
Have a nice day

Hello Wilson,
I am impressed by your knowledge of falconry. One sometimes notices at dog shows (I am not knowledgeable about them either), that the owners and the dogs frequently resemble each other. No doubt, the reason is that the owner will have purchased a type of dog he/she identifies with. But I cannot imagine falcon owner looking much like his pet, if you can call him that.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Wilson, Incredible detail & colour that is true to life. Captured at a good time with this magnificent & very graceful looking bird spreading it's wings and head turned towards the handler. I like the DOF, blurring the BG but still visible enough to see their environment. I would have thought that the male would be the larger & heavier of the two. I found your note interesting & informative.
Thanks
Cheers

Hello Wilson,
This is a fine documentary of an interesting situation!
The interaction between bird and man is well captured, good details in spite of what looks like a difficult light situation...
Good framing and the chosen DoF isolates the subjects well!

amitié et complicité entre l'homme et la bête, la bête sauvage pourtant.
Une belle impression de relief avec cete avant plan qui ressort très bien grâce à la DOF bien à propos.
