Photographer’s Note
Most recognizable symbol of Serbian capital city is Victor (Pobednik), monument sculptured by famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It is located at Kalemegdan fortress, at it’s highest circumvallation.
After Ottoman army was defeated in First Balkan war by Serbs, and liberation of Kosovo and Metohija and parts of Vardar valley from Ottoman rule, head of Belgrade municipality, Ljubomir Davidović, ordered the construction of monument in 1912. Meštrović worked on sculpture for eight months, and just few months before WWI he send it to Czech Republic for molding, where sculpture waited until the end of war.
In 1928, at the 10th anniversary of Salonika front, monument was ceremoniously erected at Kalemegdan fortress, honoring victories of Serbian army in Balkan and Great war. It symbolizes end of feudalism and slavery of Serbian people, renaissance of Serbian society, and fender from future enemies and conquerors.
