Photographer’s Note
I decided to rent the Canon 300mm f/2.8 lens again this weekend as I'll be shooting a rugby game later on today. I figured I'd get the most out of it and take a trip to the Singapore Zoo early this morning in an effort to beat the heat (it was a hot day today).
My first stop at the zoo is always the White Tiger exhibit as they're just such a majestic and photogenic animal. They seemed to just be waking up for the day as they leisurely laid about their favorite rock.
The one thing I try to do with my shots is make them something different from the norm. You can only imagine how many million of times these White Tigers have been photographed- so what can you do to make yours stand out from the usual 'happy snap'. The main thing I always try and focus on is the eyes. If you don't have the eyes sharp and in focus, nothing else really matters. The other thing I go for is interaction between the tigers (or any animal). Shortly after this shot was taken I managed some of the tigers greeting each other by tenderly nudging heads together, and another of them grooming each other.
Fair enough, they're not easy shots to get- it's all about waiting, and waiting, and waiting- and when that brief opportunity arrives- take full advantage of it!
This is the first shot I come across as I was going through my imported photos. I like the focus on the eyes and the pose of the tigers in front. Paying special attention not to crop out the paws, and the addition of the yawning tiger in the back nicely blurred (thanks to the /2.8) so as to not draw too much attention away from the main subject.
More White Tiger shots can be found in the theme; 'White Tigers'
More Lions and Tiger shots can be found in the themes; 'Lions & Tigers' & 'Lions & Tigers II'

I hope you like the shot,
