Photographer’s Note
The Stahleck Castle is one of the many castles along the Rhein River between Mainz and Cologne Germany. I understand it is now a youth hostel.
The castle is near the town of Bacharach. We didn't get to visit, but I've heard Bacharach is one of the loveliest places along the river. The high street has been restored to give an impression of what it might have looked like in the Middle Ages and everywhere in town you’ll find traditional half-timbered houses, picturesque court yards and cozy wine taverns. You can climb along an ancient set of stairs to reach the castle. This hike begins in town and wraps right around the Werner Kapelle in a spectacular ascent to the old stone fortress. The bells of the chapel still work and if you are lucky, they will sound while you are climbing.
