Photographer’s Note

Shot it at Gangasagar Fair,
Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal. This fair is held where the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal form a nexus. Hence the name Gangasagar Mela. The river Ganga which originates in the Gangotri glacier in the snow clad Himalayas, descends down the mountains, reaches the plains at Haridwar, flows through ancient pilgrimage sites such as Benares and Prayag, and drains into the Bay of Bengal. Sagar Island, at the mouth of the river Hooghly in Bengal where the Ganga breaks up into hundreds of streams, and drains into the sea, is honored as a pilgrimage site.
A dip in the ocean, where the Ganga drains into the sea is considered to be of great religious significance particularly on the Makara Sankranti day when the sun makes a transition to Capricorn from Sagittarius and this town becomes home to vast fairs, drawing visitors and recluses from all over the state. There is a common belief among the locals that the girls who take the holy dip get handsome grooms and the boys get beautiful brides. When they are done with the ritual obligations, they head towards the Kapilmuni Temple situated nearby, to worship the deity as a mark of respect.

I like this.

Very nice capture of the reflective mood of the water surface to bring up the color tone of the evening light, and silhouette of the women busy at the dip of water.

Perhaps the magic of this shot will be the light at FG and the sun, creating 2 zones of flame.

Very well composed view.

what a nice picture!I love the golden tones and the softness of the water!There is so many beautiful things in this photo,as the fire on the foreground,the sun between the women and its reflection in a line of luminous points,the transparency of the women's sari's in the sun,yes,this is wonderful!

A candle burning in a little pot as an offer, ' women doing their abblutions in ganga at sunset... hard to find more "hindu"

Wonderful Subir...the idea of the floating diya (made of leaves?) in the FG is a superb one. Great idea...your camera, it appears was very close to the water! Superb!

This festival has yielded some pretty amazing photos for you. I like your use back lighting. And the foreground candle gives it perfect balance. Wonderful sheen on the water. I can't rave enough about this!

Hello Subir, it is really a classical one. There is double light effect, in BG and in FG, which created the magic here. The silhouette of the people with the low POV is fantastic. You have framed those with a floating candle, nice timing. It may be wrong, but did you shoot it first horizontally and then cropped it to a vertical one? Anyway it is one of those masterpiece I had ever seen. TFS.

Oh how I like this photo! The candle lantern offering is perfectly situated in the frame. The water between the flame and the pilgrims looks so peaceful with the soft glow of the sun reflecting off it's surface. Stunning image...Bravo Subir!

And the note about the mela is also very informative...thank you for posting.
