Photographer’s Note
When I travel in Asia I`m allways fscinated when I see older people siiting in the way he does.
Can you do it ?
Maybe 30 minutes or longer?
He did for more than one hour!!!!!
This is interesting foe me.
I`m head of department for physiotherapie in a clinic for orthopedic rehabilitation.
About 80 % our patients are 60 + and come 10-14 days after surgery and implantation of a hip or knee prothesis.
Please see the workshop.
Last year in Germany there have been about 3000000 surgeries for implantation of an artificial joint.
And it will become more the next years,so I don`t worry about unemployment........
The main reason is arthrosis.
The WHO says:in Europe and north America everybody, older than 60 years has arthrosis in at least one joint.
The main reasons are:bad food(too much meat and fat),overweight and the lack of movement.
Another phenomen is:Last year in Germany happened 120000 femurfractures. If this happens at the femoral neck,in most cases it`s neccessary to Implant an artificial joint.
The main reasons:a bad balance and koordination and osteoporosis.
I`m nearly sure,India with about 13 times more people living there had less....
Taken with 200 mm close to the lighthouse.

Hello Leo,
Portraitwise, this is well done with clean lines, few colours and a neutral background. It's also a break with the general conventions to see the man in profile, almost from behind. Your note is also interesting and discusses a phenomenon that I have often had in mind when travelling in Asia. A few years ago I was invited to several traditional dinner parties in Afghanistan and found it impossible and unbearable to sit properly on the floor. For the Afghans it was such a natural thing.

Gert

hi Leo
Very interesting to read your note. Now I realise why your intro page has a x-ray photo.
:) to answer your question, perhaps I know some good reasons. In old days and still at present, you will find some squat toilets at home or in public places where you really squat on the toilet pan. Some people will stay on it for 30 minutes, some can finish the job quickly.
But that is a good exercise for this same position. And in old days, older people eat meals in this position too, no tables or chairs.
Except we do not sit in this way when we sleep :)
I like this capture. Very simple man about to jump into the water or sea. Caught by the photographer, so he stays and sits for a while. I think your WS is bad for TE influence :) hehe
Good work.

Hi Leo
The picture is good (nice framing, very good sharpness...) but your note is even better. Yoga is really something that we should be more interested in....
Bravo

Hi Leo,
interesting note and portrait. Exposure is fine and the half-turned posture makes for a great portrait. I like it.

hi Andreas,
it's interesting that the man's position caught my attention even before I read your note - maybe because I was thinking that I could not squat like that for long... =)
your portrait is very interesting because, as gert says, it's unconventional in its visual approach to the subjects and because the position of this man makes his whole body the focal point of the image, and not only his face. the colours of his clothes underline this sense of "unity" of the focal point.
have a good evening,
cris

Hallo Leo,

Great Portrait Andreas!
Yes, I feel the same way- and I've been living in Asia for the past 11yrs! I could't get anywhere close to the way this guy is sitting, and if I did- surely not for more then five seconds! Nice bokeh - I just might have been tempted to sharpen up the face a little tiny bit (just my personal preference).
All the best Andreas!

Hi Andreas,
It is an interesting and effective manifesto for health. I believe it so, I will not "rest" in my old age in the same manner. Excellent POV and clarity, very impressive work. Tfs! Have a nice day!

Hi leo, Nice view of this Hindu man. Indeed, it would be difficult to me to sit like this. But I read your note with big interest. So you are a doctor.. there are some on TE. Well, I could be your patient. According to what you write, I should have to go to the doctor. But it seems to me the best way to feel healthy is not to visit the doctors. I do not know even where they are.
I liked the note of bill about toilets, indeed it is very characteristic to the oriental countries.
Warm regards

Hello Leo,
Encore une fois un portrait qui évoque au premier regard l'Inde. La couleur des vêtements, le turban y contribuent beaucoup. Très bonne netteté et profondeur de champ. Bien cadré en incluant le sol couvert de reste de coquillages.
Amicalement,

Hi Leo
I come back, because I had to comment on this one. This posture is so Asian, that we do not find it unnatural & awkward, until someone mentioned it in one photograph that this is a typical Asian style. The rural folks can (but I can't because I never grew this sitting habit) sit in this posture for hours. And I liked your note as well & the WS shot you included. Do you mean to say that this way of sitting actually strengtens the knee joint? I might be surprised!!

Hi Leo,
You have a lot of stunning images. All of them well exposed, with good contrast and sharpness. I especially like this one. The subject as well as his pose are indeed interesting. The image is well composed with good light and excellent colours. The background is perfect to keep out attention on this man. Your note is most informative.
There seems to to a white halo on two parts of the man's clothing, his chin and the top of his nose and the top of his foot. Is this the result of over sharpening (I think) or is it due to the lens?
