Pienza is a town of 2231 inhabitants of the province of Siena, probably the most famous and most important art of all the Val d'Orcia to which it belongs. It is not too far from the highway Cassia and the other two major centers of the valley, San Quirico d'Orcia and Castiglione d'Orcia.
The history of Pienza, in contrast to that of neighboring towns, is not characterized by long periods of medieval history and wars. The city was in fact no more than a small village until 1462, known as Corsignano. The event that changed the fate of Pienza was the birth in 1405 of Enea Silvio Piccolomini who became 53 years after Pope Pius II. Just a trip to the pontiff Mantua led him to cross the place of birth and found that the degradation brought him to decide the building above the old town, entrusting the project to Bernardo Rossellino construction that lasted about four years and led to light a small town and harmonious shapes typically fifteenth. The untimely death of Pope Pius II closed the history of the town that has remained virtually unchanged.
Pienza is one of the city decorated with the Military Valor for the Liberation War because it was decorated with the Medaglia d'Argento al Valor Militare for the sacrifices of its people and its activities in the partisan struggle during the Second World War.
For the beauty of its historic Renaissance Pienza in 1996 became part of the natural, artistic, cultural UNESCO, followed in 2004 by the same valley in the area surrounding the Val d'Orcia
