Photographer’s Note

The Alblasserwaard is a polder in the province South Holland in the Netherlands. It is mainly known for the windmills of Kinderdijk, a village in the northwest of the Alblasserwaard.
The first human inhabitants of the Alblasserwaard settled there after the last Ice Age, around 10.000 years ago. The ice had not reached the area itself, but Eolian deposits created high points in the wet environment. These high points were places where hunter-gatherers settled, as archaeological investigations in the area have shown.
During the Middle Ages several canals and dikes were created to reclaim the land, with the last part being endiked in the second half of the 14th century. Yet numerous floods continued to happen throughout the history of the area, as it is bound by rivers on all sides.
During World War II the Bombing of Rotterdam also damaged the Alblasserwaard, when both the village center of Alblasserdam and a part of Papendrecht were hit by German bombs.
he Alblasserwaard is bordered by rivers on all sides. To the north is the Lek, which also forms the boundary between the province South Holland and Utrecht. To the west runs the Noord. At the joining of the Noord and the Lek, Kinderdijk is located. To the south runs the river Merwede, and to the east the Merwede-Kanaal, the Linge and the Zederik together form the boundary with Vijfheerenlanden.
Most of the Alblasserwaard is rural, but partially under the influence of the cities Rotterdam and Dordrecht on the borders of the area, the south and west are urbanized. The largest cities in the Alblasserwaard are Gorinchem, with 35.000 inhabitants, and Papendrecht with slightly over 30.000 people. Both are on the southern borders of the Alblasserwaard.

A dynamic composition thanks to the cyclist, it really gives the sense of action being performed. needless to say that the composition is very well balanced but the things that makes it so peculiar is the light and the contrast between a dramatic sky and the bright ground. Lively and incisive. another excellent image from traditional holland.

Hallo Jaap,

Grappig, ik was daar 10 dagen geleden met Andre aan de Kinderdijk, zal daar eerdaags iets van gaan posten. De wolkenpartij is de winnaar hier, want licht op het land is niet al te best, maar toch heb je er iets fraais van weten te brouwen met positie van de molen en vooral die fietser....perfecte timing.
Je typt altijd tegen mij "Ja wat moet ik verder nog zeggen", maar wel even je best doen hoor, ik wil graag een gevoel of kritiek wat je niet aanstaat of bevalt ;-)
Lees ook dat je een mooie 70-200 hebt gekocht, dat is een uitstekend stuk L glas en het enige verschil met de mijne is de 2.8 tegen 4.0, maar verder kwalitatief doet hij daar niet voor onder.

Hallo Jaap,

Technisch toont u hier een pracht werk, qua perspectief en diepte is dit groots.
Ook uw samenstelling met de fietser in beeld geeft een totale andere dementie.
Natuurlijk mag de Hollandse molen hier niet ontbreken.
Ik denk dat hier in volle zomer ook mooie plaatjes zijn te nemen, wanneer de kleuren wat heviger worden.

It maybe hard for me to visualize mountains in Netherlands because I only thought of it as flat land and canals :) but I like the biker in bright yellow and while most others post tulips and colorful fields, this one of new planting makes a nice contrast to the dark sky at far end.

The funny thing is that I can't cope with really flat land such as we have on the Texas coast or in Kansas, but I never had any trouble in the Netherlands. Maybe it's because those are really mountains that are just resting!

Goedenavond Jaap,
Een prachtig Hollands landschap in een goede compositie. Heel mooie combinatie van het zonlicht en de geweldige wolkenlucht. Ik vind de afwisseling van de rechte lijnen in de voorgrond heel leuk, eerst blauw dan groen/gelig, grijs, groen in het midden en dan opnieuw grijs, groen/gelig en blauw. De fietser met zijn felle kleuren is een leuk detail in het beeld.

The day looks to be cold and windy but you have still managed to capture the very essence of the landscape perfectly.
Flat land, dykes and windmills, where else but Holland.

The dirt road makes a fine lead into this landscape!
The lovely windmill stands out well against the dramatic sky, where the impressive cloud formation is well exposed with good details...
The biker adds a nice spot of colour!

Bonjour mon cher jaap,
il y a beaucoup de recherche ici, ou alors ton oeil est prodigieux en cadrant naturellement. Par exemple, ces 4 parallèles, les deux chemins et les deux petits canaux. Un ciel vraiment fantastique, dramatique à souhait.
Des lumières très bien contrastées, j'adore tout ici.

This is a well composed shot using the off center road to lead the eye through the scene. The biker adds life and scale to the shot. The off center placement of the windmill is great as is the sky. The lighting and colors are fine with excellent sharpness and DOF.

Hi Jaap,
Let me start with one minor little thing that I would have like to see differently, the horizon wher ethe land meet the sky is a bit too much in the center, though with your square format it works somewhat well, but I still would have lower the POV to get more of the land and little less of the sky just above the puffy clouds. The rest, stunning as always, great use of the lines of bike paths and cannal to lead us in and the placement of the windmill a littl off center, perfect. Technically and pp work, just right. Thanks
