Photographer’s Note
Studley Park and its neighbours Fairfield Park and Yarra Bend Park is one of the gems of Melbourne. Studley Park is big, rambling, and covered with natural Australian bush. In many areas you can lie on your back and watch the trees and birds above your head and feel far removed from city life and European sensibilities. It would not feel out of place if a member of the Wurundjerie tribe wandered out of the bush in possum skins to investigate this strange person on his territory. And yet you are only 10 minutes from the centre of the city.
Studley Park follows the course of the Yarra River for some distance, snaking its way through several suburbs. The shallow river valley has the effect of visually removing it from its surrounding suburbs.
My favourite areas are the bushland with their bird life& Bellbird picnic area where the fruit bats are. You will find many finches in the South-West corner near Victoria Street. On the other side, if you cross the pipe bridge you are likely to come face to face with brilliantly coloured parrots. Water birds can be found all along the river, and many areas ring to the delightful ping of bellbirds. The best time for birds of course is early morning or late afternoon.
Being an Australian park there is plenty of room for sport, with numbers of ovals and a golf course. Nearby attractions include the Collingwood Children's Farm and the Abbotsford Convent.
It is the ideal spot for a picnic, romantic outing, BBQ or social gathering, and the focal areas are the two boatsheds. Hire a rowing boat and row your loved one up the river and feel part of another era. It is almost obligatory for an Australian costume drama to have a boating scene shot at the Studley Park Boatsheds or with boats rowing under the suspension bridge .If you prefer a bit more adrenalin, try shooting the rapids in a kayak at Dight's Falls, or taking the motorbike for a spin (within the speed limit of course) with the petrol heads who gather at the top of the hill in Yarra Boulevard. Bike tracks (both sealed and unsealed) run through the park, and it is possible to run, walk, cycle, or rollerblade for many kilometres along the river and its tributary, the Merri Creek.
This one was also taken during our mini TE meeting in Melbourne.

Hey Santo, nice to see you again. :)
I like the perspective, which draws the eye to the main motive. It is my personal preference however, to see more of nature in the background. It looks stunning. It looks like a great place to relax, so I wouldnt mind rowing the river. I`d rather sit in the chair in the back though. :) GW.
Best regards.

Hi Girotto,
I like this picture a lot. It is full of interesting, almost geometric, lines coming from the so very well aligned boats. These conduct the eye towards the crowded one and onwards through the river until it disappears in the curve. Overall very interesting composition.

Hello Santo,
The repetitive elements of these boats present a strong visual impact for this composition. I took a couple of shot from the rear, not realizing those big letters at the front can be so eye catching. Taking a ride with the love one up the river certainly is a good idea, perhaps, it should start from you and Penny, never too old for this. I believe she would be grateful for my suggestion and make me a cup of tea next time.
I gazed for quite a while to find fault in this shot..:)). I think I may be stretching a bit too far to make a negative remark about the bright sky. Beside this, I can't see anything else.
Thanks for posting, hope all goes well with you and Penny in the coming days.

hi Santo
I always enjoy reading your story, very well written and most interesting, telling one here about a grouping when weather was bad.
The row of boats in green, white and yellow, it looks like Australian national sports colors? Making very good graphics to the eye. I like the effort you put into this composition to make the FG so much more interesting despite the dull light condition, and to give a good placement position for the group of people.
Great presentation.
tfs, bill
p/s I am waiting to see who will post the group photo :) as WS or otherwise

Hi Santo,
Studley Park, I'd completely forgotten about it, when I lived in Melbourne (1970-1975) I used to go there often for all the reasons you outlined in your note, it is a wonderful place.
I like your shot, the boats lined up make an interesting composition, particularly as you've used the numbers on the bow of the boats as a feature.
Looking back to your earlier post, it seems the five in the boat didn't make it too far up the river before turning back.
Nice work.

Peter

Hi Santo, Interesing idea, exploring the repeating shapes of the boats and highlighting the stencilled numbers, within the context of the bushland setting. But you missed the silly seagull that was perched on the boat - must have been the one behind you. Looking at it doesn't make one realise that it was a cold and wet day, you did well to retain some colour in the sky. cheers, Steve

Hi Santo.
Good sequel to the previous one. Good diagonal made by the boats and strong sense of perspective. Looks like the sky blued up a bit for you after some of us went home. Let's hope we get better weather next time.

Hi Santo,
I just have enjoyed Andrew's capture of this place and it is so amazing to see how different the human eyes are working! You use a totally different perspective and the repetitive elements give a certain dynamic to this otherwise very calm composition. YOur note is also very interesting. TFS!
Warm regards

Hi Santo - This composition is always effective - and certainly works here. The overcast weather means the light is maybe a bit grey but youve done the best under those conditions.

hello Santo
the row of boats give an impressive graphism well enhanced by the very close framing! This is superbly completed by the strong contrast between the white and dark green, and even the landscape in the background is in harmony with the boats, with its green water and foliage, and the whiteness of the trunks!Superb!

Hello Santo,
A strong repetition effect!
The low point of view works well in giving more emphasis to the row boats, and I also notice the boat in use in the background...
Picturesque place, obviously popular too since there is a rental market for this many boats!
