Lungta style prayer flags at a local monastry.

It is is a colorful panel or rectangular cloth often found strung along mountain ridges, peaks monastries high in the Himalayan belt to bless the surrounding countryside or for other purposes.

Unknown in other branches of Buddhism, prayer flags are believed to have originated with Bön (which is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors) which pre-dated Buddhism in Tibet.

There are specific prayers printed on each flags..the wind off the flags considered holy have an effect on animate and inamnimate things.

Blue (symbolizing sky / space)
White (air/wind)
Red (fire)
Green (water)
Yellow (earth)
