Photographer’s Note
Just after sunset between Pipeline and Log Cabins, two popular surf breaks on the North Shore of Oahu. I don't think that what I shot here was a very workable break, but nonetheless there was a surfer catching a few short rides. After spending three days (so far) here on the peaceful and rural North Shore, I don't know why anyone would want to venture to Honolulu or the madness of Waikiki.
update: this is Rockpile surf break.
Taking the photo:
Every now and again a larger wave would wash up to where my tripod was set up. My girlfriend would stand behind me and call "WAVE!!" so I could grab the tripod so as not to let it get undermined by the water loosening up the sand. The smaller waves are why there is a sort of "mist" around the rocks. There was so much salt spray in the air here that cleaning the filter a few times was necessary and I had to cover the camera with my sweatshirt while waiting for the light to change.
note: Please pardon any "off" colors or oversharpening. I am working on my laptop while here and the laptop screen is just no good for photo editing. I was too excited to wait until I got home to use a real monitor....

Hi, Jeffrey -
Very original view of early morning. At first I thought this was mist around large rocks, until I read your note. I think the sky is a bit blown out, but not badly so considering it was a 30-second exposure. And the soft water around the rocks is perfect.
Best,
Dan
PS: You must have added your "note" while I was entering my critique. You are hereby pardoned. :-) I understand exactly that feeling; I've done submissions to TE while traveling and had to explain that they were coming off a laptop with no editing power.

hello Jeffrey,
I like a lot the soft pastel tones, the mood of a calm and quiet evening is very appealing, especially with the silky effect of the long exposure adding a dreamy touch. I agree with Dan that the sky is a little overexposed, but that is not a major point. I'd correct the barrel distortion on the horizon though, it's a little distracting.
best,
Kristine
