Roots of Democracy Photo

Photographer’s Note

The swiss democracy works according to the direct participation system, on federal level as well as in most cantons it takes the form of a vote by letter or personal appearance at a polling station.

But in only two cantons out of 26, Glarus & Appenzell Innerrhoden, the validation of the cantonal objects (laws, budgets...) takes place on the cantonal capital main square, the citizens vote by raising their hands answering the questions of the Landamann thus perpetuating a direct democratic system having its roots in the middle age.

This yearly general assembly is called "Landsgemeinde" and on this image you see people voting at todays "Landsgemeinde" (locally known as "Landsgmend") in Appenzell. Due to poor light and the historical value of such a meeting, I chose to go sepia. This is also the very first time I seriously used the live view function of my camera to aim at the scene over the first rang people.

Check out the attached WS to discover this year's prominent visitor, but if you are not Swiss I doubt you have ever seen this guy...

Hallo Jean Yves! Nicht viele Leute bekommen diese kleine spezielle Art zu waehlen zu Gesicht, ausser man ist Journalist, entspechend hat Dein Foto auch einen journlistischen Wert. Eigentlich muss ich sagen, dass ich doch etwas stolz bin von so kurligen Leuten abzustammen :))) Nun ja, ich bin dann aber doch fuer die briefliche Abstimmung um ehrlich zu sein. Es birgt schon manch fehlhaftes Verhalten in sich, dieses Hand heben oder nicht. Keeing up with the neighbour :))) und weaehlt dann auch so, auch wenn man anders denken wuerde ... koennte ich mir vorstellen. Tolles Dokument. Schoener Abend, die Zuerischnuerre mit Appenzeller Roots ... Barbara.

Salut,
on accepte les terroristes étrangers et espions dans ces "Landsgemeinde" ? :)
Franchement, quand j'y pense, ça me fait toujours halluciner qu'on vote encore comme ça dans un pays d'Europe central au XXIe siècle...
Une bonne image documentaire, bien que je ne sois pas fan de ce sépia un peu trop "saturé".

Good image, and for once I'm going to say (this is not about you, but a generality), excellent notice!

My only nits are that your version is really dark, and maybe that it should be a bit wider, so that people from further away than the Swiss history teachner writing can get an idea of how many actually go to vote.

Excellent work!

And the WS, well, yes, he's a "Prominenz", but not one that I'd run to for an autograph!

C'est vrai que ça fait un peu rétro comme mode d'élections mais là au moins on ne peut pas mentir aux sondages. Qui est-ce qui compte les mains?
Ton WS est superbe et je trouve que ce "costume" t'irait fort bien...tu te présentes quand?

Gran foto de una gran momento , el tono sepia no queda mal desde el punto de vista que aqui nos muestras y muy bien al utilizar el live wiew , es otra opcion .Gracias de nuevo por tus criticas que a mi me enseñan mucho .

Un bon matériel graphique de cette forme particulière de vote. La teinte sépia lui donne un caractère intemporel à la scène. Excellent lumière et les détails.

Salut JY, étonnant de voir une photo sépia dans ta galerie mais c'est celle qui m'attire le plus, aussi du fait qu'il y ait des gens (:o))) et que le sujet soit bien sûr très intéressant. Je n'ai jamais vu de telles assemblées bien qu'ayant travaillé 3 hivers en Suisse - il est vrai, dans des stations de ski, donc je suis heureuse de pouvoir voir comment se "fait" la démocratie dans certains cantons de ce beau pays.

Très chouettes, toutes ces mains levées et les façades sont aussi fabuleuses, même en monochrome ce qui rend le tout un peu intemporel, très plaisant !
