Photographer’s Note
The Danza Azteca combines pre-conquest religious traditions with the Mexican Catholic worship of the Mother Goddess. The name "conchero" comes either from the shells worn on the ankles of the participants or from the armadillo shell originally used to make the mandolin-like instrument used in the ceremonies. The annual Festival of the Concheros in Querétaro, Mexico, attracts several thousand dancers of all ages.
