Photographer’s Note
This is another of our favorite places of St. Louis. We are generally not fond of restaurant chains or any other sort of chain, even hotels (well, I'm kind of partial to the Fairmont chain of hotels as you may have seen in my gallery), but this one is an exception. It is the Westin Hotel in downtown St. Louis, right across the street from the Cardinals Baseball (Busch) Stadium. We usually find our way in there before a baseball game for a few beers at the bar and some appetizers and have gone for their Sunday breakfast more than a few times. It's a pleasant place to go, the prices are not too bad (as compared to those of the stadium) and the food is good and the beer cold.
I shot this the same day as my "Springtime at Busch Stadium" compositional faux pas, only this was exactly an hour earlier in the evening. The light from the sun was at a perfect angle to stream in the windows behind some gauzy curtains, it cast a strange light on the inside of the place. I tried to capture that light with this photo. It looked best as it was coming through the curtains behind the liquor bottles and glassware, but that part alone wasn't very interesting so I included the bartender and a customer to balance it out with a human element. Even though I cut off the bartender's feet, I still like the shot for the light. Had I brought my Sigma I could have gotten more in, but I was going to be sitting in the nose-bleed seats, and I only had room in my jacket pockets for one extra lens (70-300mm), a polarizer, extra battery and LensPen in case I touched the lens when changing them.
So, that's it for today. I'm kind of going backwards a few days - I have a bunch of nice shots from the past couple weeks!
Have a great Thursday!

Superb lights/shadows management. Incredible mood of this bar. Fine foto, no doubt.

Hey Reed,
What an unusual bar, normally they are so dark you can't see a hand in front of your face, sunlight too, now that's a bonus.
Now about the composition, just kidding. Actually there is probably a little too much headroom, cause for me the bottom of the frame is more interesting than the ceiling. You're right, great light, the patterns on the walls would make any movie cameraman green with envy.
Good shot, glad to see one or two of my favorite memory erasers on the shelf.
Cheers
Pete

I can see the light so bright, you've been there early, excellent use of natural light, the clarity of this one is superb.
Cheers Reed!

Hi Reed,
What a difference to those Elephant Rocks shots!
Wow, the light is really an eyecatcher here, just awesome. Very atmospheric - I usually don't go to places like that when I'm in the U.S. or Canada and go see a game (hockey, of course) but this looks really inviting.
I don't think cutting off the bartender's feet hurts the shot (though it might have hurt his pride, LOL)... This shot is all about the light and if you hadn't pointed out that you cut off the feet, I wouldn't even have noticed.
Have a great day, thanks for sharing (and making me thirsty!)

Hi, Reed,
this is a wonderful shot. The light is spectacular and does make the shot. Marvelous sharp detail, beautiful clear colors and a fabulous array of different things to explore throughout. Very, very nice!! Many thanks and kind regards,
Shelly

Hi there Reed,
Good shot, great local info. This kind of post is a treasure for people visiting your town, plus - as I said - it's a pretty good shot too! As you write yourself: it's the light that does it.
Benny
PS: Don't know much about baseball, but I did the Busch stadium tour in 1992 (wearing a football shirt). In fact I still have the souvenir pencil, I think.

A great interior shot of the bar. Ok so it's a normal sight to our western eyes, but it's a good representation of American life and shot in nice light conditions.
Cheers!

Hi Reed
Very interesting scene
Original picture tooken from the bartender place
I note a very good lights exposure management well balanced.
I think that a thiner frame will give a bigger picture.
Best regards
Didi
