Photographer’s Note

I bring you a photo from this afternoon when a big storm was seobre the city of Alcala de Henares and had left without leaving a lot of Holy Week procession.

Plaza de Cervantes

Data from before the thirteenth century, and although it was a place situated outside the walled enclosure, was subsequently incorporated into the city from becoming the sixteenth century in the city center, social and economic character that currently holds . Called Market Square as the venue, from the Middle Ages, the weekly market and an important annual fair, granted by the King of Castile in 1184. It served as scenery for all kinds of public celebrations, including the bull fights until the nineteenth century. In the seventeenth century were only the two side porches on which the council had jurisdiction. In the nineteenth century it underwent various transformations given its present form. It was then moved out when his name to the current place of Cervantes.

Ruins of St. Mary Major (Chapel of the hearers and Tower).
Until 1936, this place won one of the parishes of the medieval village. Today is only kept the chapel of Cristo de la Luz, baroque of the seventeenth century, and the chapel of the hearers, founded early in the fifteenth century by the hearers of the king, Pedro Díaz de Toledo, and in which a bow with plasterwork Gothic and the reconstructed stack where Cervantes was baptized on October 9 1547. He is currently an exhibition hall. On one side of the ruins stands a monument to the biographer of Cervantes Astrana Luis Marín.

Opened in 1879, the bronze statue was designed by the Italian sculptor Pedro Nicoli.

Courtyard Theater-Comedy.
This is a unique building in the West, which for four centuries and has been representing local public spectacles. Comedias yard, built in 1602, became in 1769 coliseum roof, and was transformed into a romantic drama in 1830, still on the earlier structures. Because of its exceptional interest in the restoration have all been preserved remnants of its different construction phases.

Music kiosk.
Designed by architect Martin Pastells, this stylish stand was made by melting Lebrero Madrid in 1898.
Circle of Contributors.
Work, also, of Pastells, was built in 1893. Stresses its brick facade and the noble hall, decorated with allegorical paintings of Felix Yuste Alcalá in 1901.

Town Hall.
Old school-convent of San Carlos Borromeo, or the dying, was transformed in 1870 to house the Town Hall. The facade is of eclectic style and the chamber is decorated with stucco. Store a large collection of paintings and other artistic and historical objects.
