Photographer’s Note

HAPPY EASTER! to all of you celebrating this...

Easter is peak season in Oppdal.

Can you imagine, after the long cold winter Norwegians go to the mountains to enjoy the last rest of snow during Easter…! I think the psychological explanation may be that by this time of year we know winter is over and we seek the snow voluntarily because we know when we get back from our Easter vacation spring has arrived… Besides, skiing in spring sun is a great experience and you get a nice tan as a bonus!

What you see here is Mt Hovden, the second of the ski areas in Oppdal to be presented in this series. Mt Hovden is the earliest location that was developed for alpine skiing in Oppdal, and this is where I learned to ski! So did Erik Håker, a local lad and later a several times winner of alpine World Cup races. To be fair I have to add Erik raced the slope 2-3 times for each time I did, hehehe…

The image shows how agriculture is combined with the far more lucrative tourism business, as the small farm we see has sold some of the ground for building apartments and cabins for sale or rent.

Oppdal is an alpine village located between Dovrefjell mountain plateau in the south and and Trollheimen mountain range to the west. The village is surrounded by majestic mountains, green valleys with idyllic summer farms and fine trout fishing.

Traditionally Oppdal was a place for winter tourism, but in the later years the range of offered activities for summer has increased. Today you can go mountain climbing, take a musk ox safari or go rafting or visit museums and art galleries if that is your preference, to mention a few.

This small series will show the different sides of Oppdal as a winter destination.

Hello Pablo,

A superb winter's landscape under a very nice blue sky. A composition very well balanced in differents plans well delimited. The house's colurs arise very well in the white of the snow well collected. I like too the graphic effect of the moutian in the blue of the sky.

Hi Pablo. I expect they are starting to get the ski fields ready in our South Island as we have just had out first cold snap with snow down to 300m in the far south so we are the opposite to you. Nice photo. The FG buildings give good depth to the scene, good colours and clarity also. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Pablo. The red container and the two houses contrasting with each other are very well placed in the foreground. They show the way towards the mountain in the background which stands well out against the blue sky.

Without a doubt of which it is a beautiful place.

This winter sports resort, would be seen better and with more dynamism, if a great amount of tourists were appraised.

Winter is lasting longuer in Norway, something I did not experienced since my early travel was in May. But the blue sky gives a lively atmosphere to this snowy landscape.

Hi Pablo,
I like the way the house is surrounded by a smooth white blanket of snow with a fence-line for emphasis. It's interesting how the mountain echoes the roof-line.

I think you're right both about the strong contrast between winter snow and the explosion that spring can make in a week or two and the lure of spring skiing. We're skiing too and it's definitely spring skiing. Too bad we're powder hounds.

so I see you guys still got lots of snow, personally I´m glad it´s almost all gone here in Germany already, but I ahve to admit this one looks pretty nice. The red of the one house stands out well against the snow, it´s a great focal point in the image. Compositionally wise very nice, the blue sky also looks great, very nice!

It's a beautiful autumn Sunday morning here in Australia, and the 'hot cross buns' are toasting.
I wonder how many of your shots on TE have red houses in them! The Norwegian traditions must have been formed long ago with consideration of the photographic needs of TE in mind!
As usual the deep red makes a wonderful combination with the white and the superb blue of the very early Spring sky. Somehow, you always get the proportions, the horizon line and the angle just right in what appears to be a simple photo. The sharpness is exemplary, superbly revealing the details of the rocks and trees on the still-snowy slope.

Hi Pablo,

Yes, this is something different than we, for example here in the middle of Europe, imagine Easter. For example I was in my parents' weekend garden with them and my sons, was doing a lot of photos, burning barbecue, enjoying the (momentarily) warm spring sunshine... Although I like snowy winters, I think it was enough for this season, I shouldn't like to see snow to at least November 2009. :) Fantastic pic, wonderful place and lights. I absolutely love those beautiful red houses on Your pics, they're something very unusual for me, and I only saw them on Norwegian photos, as mentioned (mostly on Yours). They make a kind of image like this well color balanced (red / white). Perfect sharpness, colors, compo, sky etc. etc. - as always on Your photos, Master.

From time to time I come here from my main site TrekNature, because I miss You and Your great shots, my Friend. I learned so much from You and You'll never be forgotten from my side.

I see you are continuing with Oppdal... it seems you had a nice time in this spot! I only skied twice or three times in my life, in the Alps in north Italy. I'm surprised to see this Mt. Hoveden is full of trees, generally the slopes for skiing in the Alps are free from trees. Your composition is simple but appealing, the strong spring light contrasts with the winter appearance of the place creating a particular atmosphere.
