Photographer’s Note
This is from a gorgeous fall day spent on a section of the Loyalsock Trail, which is without a doubt the most well-marked trail I have ever hiked! Many thanks to the Wiliamsport Alpine Club, who have maintained the LT since 1953! It runs from a point about 10 miles North of Montoursville, in Lycoming County, PA, to a spot in Wyoming County called Ringdale. We only did a little bit that day because of time constraints (we started basically at the beginning of the trail and ascended to Smith's Knob, then turned around and backtracked). According to the PA DCNR, the Loyalsock Trail is considered "strenuous"--and I vouch for that! Like most (okay, all) Pennsylvania mountain trails, it is very rocky, and the ascents/descents are extremely steep. I would definitely recommend supportive, grippy footwear if you plan to hike in PA :) On the other hand, it's in the middle of nowhere so you basically have the pristine woods to yourself, and the views are fabulous.
