Harmful Beauty !

This title may be irritating; but let me explain.
This is a partial view from the marble seats of the antique theater in Aphrodisias in Kaira (Western Anatolia).
This beautiful poppies found there a new habitat for themseleves and grow there.
But if they will not be removed from time to time, they can grow quite rapidly and the power created by their rootes can cause crackings in the marble !
Sounds to be unbelievable, but is a fact which endangeres many antique settlements throughout the world; uncontrolled power !
The roots dries up during daytime and during night they absorb huge amounts of water so that their volume grows approximately 5 times of their normal size (like a sponge) and this power causes the cracks.
By the way this was the way how the suculptures in antque times broke their marble blocks from the marble quarries. Instead of roots, they but wood blocks in the drilled holes and watered them. The swollen wood poles than cracked the marble !

At WS you can see also this wonderfull antique theater with a capacity of 7000 seats.

Zararlı güzellik !

Belki tuhafınıza giden bir başlık, ama anlatayım.
Bu kare, Karya bölgesindeki antik Afrodisyas kenti'nin tiyatrosunun sıralarından bir detay çalışması.
Bu güzel gelincikler, kendilerine mermerlerin ek yerlerinde yeni bir yaşam sahası bulmuşlar.
Ancak bunları zaman zaman temizlemek gerekiyor. Bu işlemi yapmazsanız, taşların arasındaki boşlukta oluşam kök yumağı o kadar güçleniyor ki, bir süre sonra mermerleri çatlatmaya başlıyorlar !
Bu gerçek inanılmaz gibi gelse de, dünya üzerindeki pek çok antik yerleşim biriminin en ciddi sorunlarından birisi : kontrol edilemiyen güç !
Bu kökler gündüz saatlerinde kuruyup, gece havadaki nem veya çiğ'i emerek normal hacimlerinin 5 katı kadar şişiyor ve böyleklikle mermeri kırmaya başlıyorlar.
Doğa'nın bu tekniğini antik çağda heykel ustaları da gözlemlemişler. Onlar da mermer bloklarına deldikleri deliklere tahta sopaları sokmuşlar; daha sonra bunları ıslatarak şişmelerini sağlamışlar. Böylece şişen sopalar mermerleri kırmış. Doğanın öğrettiği bir teknoloji !

How such a beautiful flower could be dangerous, and though...
You have a great idea to explain this phenomenon and you've done it in a very good way thanks to this composition.
Great colours and contrast, and a good work on the textures.
Very unusual shot.

Indeed very beautiful flowers! Reading your title I first thought of the kind of flower you get opium from, but this harmfulness is also an aspect! The natural composition here is quite successful!

Aslında bu kareniz, betonlaşan dünyaya gelinciklerin isyanını gösteriyor anlayan gözlere.Bu açıdan çok anlamlı bir kare.Selam ve saygı.

Hi Mesut, Interesting note. Indeed, the plants can be harmful and it is a big effort to remove them. And when they are not removed, like big trees in old temples of Cambodia or Mexico - the view is very impressive. But here are such nice delicate flowers and they can be dangerous to marble... Afrodisia - I suppose I was there but it was more then ten years ago. . Is it not far from Hierapolis? Turkey has wonderful Greek temples, theaters, and other ruins. it seemed to me thar wherever you put spade into the ground you'll find antique column. Beautiful photo

Une photo symbole d'une grande beauté. La vie qui surgit là où on ne l'attend pas est l'idée qui vient à l'esprit en voyant ces coquelicots pousser dans le rocher.
