Photographer’s Note

There is no better place to learn about Hinduism than Varanasi. Situated in Uttar Pradesh, people say it’s one of the oldest places in the world (Over 5,000 years old!). This is a really sacred place for Hindus, one of the 12 places where Lord Shiva shot up in a blinding column of light to the heavens.

Life in Varanasi revolves around the Ganges. Along the banks of the sacred river, are lined around 100 ghats. These are large built-up areas, many of which were built by Maharajas of India. The best time to see life in Varanasi is from a boat in the early morning when people come to bathe, wash clothes, perform yoga and pray. (MJ)
