Photographer’s Note

Chia Lagoon and Spiaggia Sa Colonia. The perfect place for an Ichnusa beer whilst the white hat of the day washes back accross the dunes.

I really liked this photo because I was trying to capture the heat of the place at the time this was taken due to a heatwave coming accross from North Africa.

I know it may appear as a bland holiday snap of coastline but apart from the above the detail that I wanted was for the lagoon to be distinct and highlighted. Not sure it worked though. Any advice on how this could have been better achieved would be gratefully accepted.

Chia is on the eastern side of the South Western "cape" of Sardinia about an hour or so south of the wonderful city of Cagliari and near to Pula. It is a relatively arid place with mediterranean scrub being the major feature of the countryside. The beaches are magnificent with white sand and turquoise sea in front of dappled lagoons complete with communities of stark pink flamingos.

They have a local drink called Mirto which is a digestif but has long been enjoyed by my friends and I when on the beach in the cooler evenings at sunset. I would recommend it. Seriously.

There is a wonderful fort tower behind where this photo was taken (and which can be seen as the chia tower on many other photos) which is a remnant of a more militarised time when Italy was a collection of principalities rather than one unified country and I understand was used as a watchtower to repel turkish pirates and other invaders.
