Photographer’s Note

Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating.
The Alblasserwaard tour starts in the town of Kinderdijk, a tourist mecca famous for its windmills. (Molentocht means windmill tour.) The Krimpenerwaard is one of the oldest polders in Holland, dotted with ancient villages, and you can skate through nine of them in a day. (Negendorpentocht means Nine Villages Tour.) You can read about the area's history in this Krimpenerwaard site.

Aside from the scenery, the joys of Dutch skating are the companionship of other skaters, and the delicious food served up along the canals. With so many skaters on the ice, you're guaranteed to find someone who skates at your speed, and gets hungry or thirsty with the same regularity.

I hope you like this shot. It's another with the canon 17-40 a fantastic lens. well I have enjoy myself with making photo's that day.

Het gedempte licht in de rechter voorgrond maakt de schaatsers links nog levendiger en dat draagt dan weer bij aan de specifieke winterse schaatssfeer. Die heb je dus fantastisch getroffen.

Zo blijft de winter zijn tentakels nog even uitstrekken terwijl de lente zijn eerste vingeroefeningen doet.

Hi Jaap,

I really like this shot, it's got so much of interest within it. I really like the way the sun coming in from the right has melted some of the ice and created contrast on the boats. Also the vibrant colours of the coats contrast nicely with the frosty tree and the distant windmill.

Dag, Jaap. Sommige Zwitsers zijn de winter beu, maar jij schijnt er nog van te willen genieten ;o). Je compositie is zeer geslaagd met de schaatsers op de voorgrond die contrast en diepte in de foto brengen. Zij tonen ook een typische winterse activiteit in Nederland, die dit jaar weer mogelijk was. De molen staat mooi tussen de schaatsers en de boten aan de rechterkant. Zeer mooi licht in dat fantastische plaatje.

This is a great action shot. The angle of the shot works well using the canal to create a diagonal through the shot. The windmill is a nice addition to the scene making it truly Dutch. The skaters add a nice human touch to the shot. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF.

Same canal but different pov: equally interesting and fine!
Pretty good sense of depth and perspective: a very dynamic picture, one can feel the moviment of the people. The same old fine windmill is a special and lovely focal point. Furthermore I like the light which comes sideways and those boats aground!

I'm surprised that the ice is thick enough to bear the weight of so many people, especially as it is a fairly rare occurrence. Good framing with added interest from the boats packed away for the season. We can follow the skaters with our eyes all the way to the typical windmill. The winter light is beautiful too.

Belle mise en image de ces patineurs aguerris qui glissent avec élégance sur le canal gelé. Ce qui ressort dans cette très belle composition ce sont les bateaux pris dans la glace.

Another beautiful presentation of that national past time, as effective as documentary as wonderful as compo. You managed to avoid that all that people cluttered the image and instead of that, they are a nice contribute to the compo, as our sight is invited to follow them to the picturesque windmill in the FG. Gorgeous light and colours. I could haven't noticing that it is a canal if it wasn't for the boats on the right.

In de vioorgrond de schaduw, de schaatsers in de zon, en de meute verweg vedwijnen in een lichte nevel, samen met de silhouet van de molen.

Your photographic series form January 10th are some of the finest on Trekearth. This is a somewhat different composition, but just as beautiful, and rife with action. The vantage point is especially effective, low angle, and showing the boats frozen in place, and the skaters enjoying the time on the ice. First rate!

Hi Jaap.
Nice sharp shot with good colour and light. Great low viewpoint and the well captured action of the skiers, making this shot dynamic. We just don't get this kind of scene here in Australia, of course!

The wintry tones of your photo are fantastic. Old wind mill and Dutch building increase the mystic, oldies atmosphere there also with old type of boats at foreground. I liked colorful skiers and amazing contrasts between gray, frozen canal surface and white snow on it. Just splendid one with light from right. Congratulations.

Hi Jaap. Its seems strange to be in the same place as the boats and not be wet! Wonderful soft light and hazy BG sky give this scene an amazing atmosphere. Thanks for sharing.
