A bright spot on a dull day Photo

Photographer’s Note

Yesterday here in Westphalia we have had a really awful day: drizzle the whole day, temperature: +4°C, fog, a lot of snow slush and puddles everywhere - but there has been a bright spot in the park of the upper castle (we also have a lower one ;-), a blooming witch-hazel shrub (Hamamelis virginiana, in German: Zaubernuss).

They are deciduous shrubs or (rarely) small trees growing to 3-8 m tall. Its fruit (you can see one of these capsules in my picture), flowers, and next year's leaf buds all appear on the branch simultaneously - a real rarity among trees. The flowers of this species are produced on the leafless stems in winter. Each flower has four slender strap-shaped petals 1-2 cm long, pale to dark yellow, orange, or red. These petals can be coiled up in bitter cold. The forked twigs of Witch Hazel are preferred as divining rods.

The bark and leaves are astringent. Extracts are used in aftershave lotions and lotions for treating bruises and insect bites and witch-hazel is the active ingredient in many hemorrhoid medications - but I think the best attribute is that it is blooming in winter - on grey, cold and humid days with puddles and snow slush ...

Your photo shows signs of spring, nothing like that here yet. Beautiful details that also repeat on blurry background. Besides your photo shows that even on a dullest day beauty can be found if you look close enough.

Ich glaube es erst wenn ich es mit eigenen Augen sehe....auf jeden Fall eine schöner Aufnahme dieser Früchte.,mit guter Schärfe und einem schön verwaschenen Hintergrund..

très bien vu, ayant aussi un eos digital , j'ai reconnu très vite les couleurs et ce rendu 3d des gros plans avec une petite profondeur de champs, avec une netteté sur l'avant plan exceptionnelle

Guten morgen lieber Frank,
"Stimmungsparallellen" ! Ohne Deinen heutigen Beitrag gesehen zu haben, habe ich auch meinen Sehnsucht nach dem Fruehling (endlich) in meinem Beitrag gezeigt. Hoffentlich ist es bald soweit.
Hier die oeffnenden Knospen des Zaubernusses, erweckt auch diesen Sehnsucht.
Schlicht, einfach aber schoen.

Very good macro of the witch hazel. It's been very mild here lately (11°C) but no signs of spring yet, although I haven't see any of this variety, so maybe.....? Very good use of wide aperture to blur the background. The WS image is good too, but there is enough light on this one not to need the flash.

Hallo Frank. Wie es scheint, willst Du mit dieser Zaubernuss den Frühling herbeizaubern. Das ist ganz in meinem Sinn, denn wir alle warten sehnlichst auf das Ende des Winters. Das Gelb der Blüten spricht alle Sinne an. Sehr schön. Grüße aus Kassel, Wolfgang.

Chez toi aussi il y a des arbres en fleurs ;o) A lire ta note, tu as bien fait de ne pas montrer l'affreux ciel qu'il y a en ce moment à Siegen.
Je ne connaissais pas ces witch-hazel shrub (Hamamelis virginiana). Les noisetiers fleurissent aussi en cette période chez nous mais pas sous cette forme.

Ooooh you caught spring already... God that's early. I'm longing for higher temperatures and sunny days here myself. Thanks for posting this lovely scene from the nearby future! The DOF is absolutely splendid as is the sharpness of the subject. Vivid early spring colours and good framing make it a top shot.

interessant, bei Euch, im Norden, beginnt der Frühling früher als bei uns? Die reinen und heiteren Farben sind sehr angenehme Vorboten der neuen Jahreszeit (und sie kommen auch ohne Sonnenschein oder Blitz sehr gut zur Geltung). Eine gut gelungene Nahaufnahme, wo ich feststellen kann, dass Dein Objektiv ein einwandfreies Bokeh hat.
