Photographer’s Note

A long walk up Mount Etna took us through a black, otherworldly landscape. The temperature plummeted and winds howled, flinging volcanic grit against our faces and bare calves. The view was worth it, though looking down over Sicily and across the Medina Strait to mainland Italy. The only disappointment - it's too dangerous to continue all the way to the smoking cone without benefit of a guide.
