Photographer’s Note
Took this photograph a couple days prior to my Cupola House, posted a while back. No one was as impressed by that one as I was so I stayed away from Chicago pictures for a while. That is, until I was looking around my photo folders and remembered this one.
There are a lot of photos of Buckingham Fountain, it's probably one of the more heavily shot places in Chicago, if not the United States. I took both this photograph and tried an HDR (that I will post on TrekLens) that turned out well - I have not seen a photograph of Buckingham like either one, so I feel safe that I can post them as my original work.
This was taken in the evening, not long before sunset, just after a summer cool front rolled through Chicago. I shot into the sun with the fountain and buildings silhouetted under the glistening water droplets coming from the fountain. It was a wonderful evening to enjoy being outside, but it is rare that a summer evening is uncomfortable in the Windy City. It's one of my favorite places in the summer. We had been out and about the city all day, I brought my camera, but didn't feel comfortable advertising my belongings with my old tripod, which, while a Manfrotto and very nice, is slightly heavy and bulky to be hauling around on the El. Now I have a great carbon fiber tripod - while it is not a Gitzo (it's a Feisol), it folds up super small and if I keep the bag over it, not real evident what it is. So, I'll be back to Buckingham Fountain some day for the real HDR shot. They are extremely hard to get right when you hand hold the camera.
Anyway, this is not an HDR and not an extremely unusual shot of some far-away exotic place, just my rendition of another popular tourist destination!
Thanks for looking!

COngratulations for the perfect exposure and the great control of lights and shadows, expecially in the sprays of the fountain. The are in nice contrast with the dark cloudy sky

Hey Reed,
Nice silhouette shot of the fountain; the last rays of light illuminate the water and creates a pleasant contrast with the dramatic skies as well as with the buildings. With such an ultra wide angle have you tried to get closer? This would yield a dramatic and an even deeper perspective.
TFS!

Excellent combination of graphical background, minimalistic composition and great sky. Thanks for sharing!

Great shot of the fountain set against a lovely sky. The silhouettes allow us to concentrate on the fountain itself which is illuminated beautifully. I checked out the HDR on TL. You did a great job on that too. It looks very natural, as daylight HDR tend to look fake.

I like this so much.
Appropriate time of exposure makes the buildings look like silhoutte only, and great fountain's water drops.
The cloudy sky is a very good pros of this picture.

PS. I hope I'll have opportunity to sightsee Chicago.
My best apologies for the grammar mistakes.

Hi reed, this is one kick-a*s photo! The light falling on the fountain is amazing and that sky - well how the hell did you get it and eberything else so perfectly metered. The buildings in sillhouette are icing on the cake. TFS, Lisa. PS: loved your Blues Series too, wish I had more SMiley things to go round!

one of the most rewarding aspects of TE is beign allowed to browse through a new gallery and liking what you see.
You have some nice work Reed. I like how the silhouettes of the city in the background allow us focus on Buckingham Fountain.
