Photographer’s Note

Fortress of the Giribita or Fortress of Our Lady of Porto Salvo Implanted next to the sea, over a rocky tip between Paço de Arcos and Caxias.
It was built by order of King D. Joao IV in XVII sc (1649).
Some years later adopted the denomination of Fortress of Our Lady of Porto Salvo, due to the proximity of the Fortress with this village and to the existence in that locality of a chapel with the invocation of Our Lady.
It’s a small maritime fortress, in Baroque style, destined to reinforce the defense of the Tagus estuary, supporting the defense provided by the Fortress of São Julião da Barra
